Every year, PSCU uses its Member Insight suite of analytic tools to analyze credit and debit card transactions from all of its Owner credit unions. This year’s analysis looked closely at the transaction mix conducted during the holiday spending period to gather insights on how cardholder purchasing trends are changing. And they are changing!
PSCU Credit Unions Spent More
• Mastercard reported 4.9% growth;
Visa reported 9-9.5% growth
• PSCU saw 10.2% growth overall (Credit &
Debit). Which led to a $100 increase in
spend per account on Debit alone!
Active Program
Management Ensures Growth
Actively managed programs averaged over $1,000 more in per-account spend in full year-over-year comparison.
eCommerce/Card Not
Present Growth
• Consumers showed persistent and
emerging preference toward eCommerce
versus traditional merchants.
• We are also starting to see downward
movement in Brick & Mortar/Card Present
Spend – with only 2.5% growth in 2017
versus 8% last year.
Interchange Observations
Although we are seeing compression in both Card Present and Card Not Present Transactions, the interchange rate for eCommerce/Card Not Present Transactions is 12 bps higher than Card Present.
